Alexandria-MMTA State Piano Contest Prelims

Information has arrived at the MMTA State Piano Contest Site in Alexandria:  January 24, 2015

 

There will be NO cancellation or postponement of the contest for any reason. If conditions prevent early morning travel, come later in the day and we will work to fit them in. No provision will be made for any student who misses contest for any reason.

Please wear dress clothes. (No jeans or t-shirts or shirts with writing on them) Make sure shoes are appropriate for playing the pedals if they need to play the pedals for their pieces. It is helpful for students to practice leading up to performance with the shoes on that they will be using. Please make sure your nails are clipped and rings and bracelets that could hit the keyboard during playing are not worn. This is a special event.

 

Students are to bring completed registration slips to the door monitor 15 minutes before their scheduled time. A $5.00 fee will be assessed to students who forget their slips. The slip will then be taken to the assigned room and presented to the doorkeeper.   Students are to number the measures for the piece being played. Copies are not allowed.

 

Students and parents should be quiet in the hallways, when you first enter the building, and by each site where students are playing.

 

T-shirts and tote bags are available for purchase.

 

Students are allowed a brief warm-up that is not a part of their contest piece. There will also be a piano upstairs available for warm ups. Limit time to 5 minutes if others are waiting to use the piano.

 

Location is Calvary Lutheran Church. Calvary Lutheran Church, 605 Douglas Street, Alexandria Directions are:. once you are on Broadway (the main highway into Alex from I 94) go 3 miles north to 6th Street, take a left and go west 3 blocks to Douglas. The church is on your left. Park in the main parking lot and enter the main door.

Critiques will be mailed to me. Critiques will be graded with numbers ranging from 94 to 98. Winners will have scores of 96-98. All other students will receive a grade of 94. All winning critiques will be clearly marked with a red "WINNER" stamp.

MMTA State Piano Contest Prelims-St. Ben's

Look at this! Times already for the MMTA State Piano Contest Prelims at St. Ben's. I will get the registration slips ready and get those to students at their lesson times. Please be watching for these to come home. These are expensive little pieces of paper but are extremely helpful for those organizing this event for so many students throughout the state!

 

 

The MMTA Central District Piano Contest will be held at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph on January 24, 2015. Please have students enter the building on the west side of the Benedicta Arts Center. Parking is available in Lot 6.

 

 

You will be receiving a contest schedule for your students soon from Heidi Hansen. If you must make any schedule changes, there will be a $10.00 charge for any changes.

 

 

 

· Each student must present this slip at the registration desk at the west entrance of the BAC 15 minutes before the scheduled playing time. A $5 fee will be charged for replacement slips if a student forgets their slip.

 

· Students must have original music with measures numbered. No photo copies are allowed. Forgotten or duplicated copies will disqualify the student.

 

· NO PRACTICE ROOMS ARE AVAILABLE. Each student may do a short warm-up before playing the contest piece. It may not contain any part of the contest piece.

 

· There will be no cancellation or postponement of the contest for any reason. In case of bad weather, come when you can and we will work you into the schedule. No provision will be made for any student who misses contest for any reason.

 

· T-shirts will be available for sale.

 

· Please remind your students to keep noise to a minimum in the hallways.

Students will be permitted to warm-up before playing. This could be scales, chords, arpeggios, or any piece other than their contest piece. The warm-up may not contain any part of the contest piece!

 Critiques will be mailed to me. Critiques will be graded with numbers ranging from 94 to 98. Winners will have scores of 96-98. All other students will receive a grade of 94. All winning critiques will be clearly marked with a red "WINNER" stamp.

Adjust the bench. Correct distance from the keys is necessary for your comfort

and best playing.

Breathe. Everyone needs oxygen and we play best when we've taken a moment to get our brain in gear.

Concentrate on your music now. Put all other thoughts aside and concentrate only on your music.

MMTA Ensemble Festival

If you have any questions about the following information please contact me.  Listed below are directions to the performance site, MMTA Ensemble Festival Etiquette, and Performance times.

Bethel Lutheran Church

Bethel is in downtown Willmar on Becker and 4th Street (411 Becker Ave. SW) From east or west, come straight into Willmar on Highway 12.  Turn south at the 7th Street stoplight.  One block to Becker, then left to 4th street.  The church has a tall bell tower which has a clock in it. 

From north or south on business Hwy. 71, turn west at the stoplight at the base of the big bridge over the railroad tracks (Litchfield Ave.).  Go west three blocks to 4th street. Turn left (south) one block to the church. 

If you park on the street (Becker Ave.) you enter the doors next to the fountain and go up the stairs to the sanctuary.  If no parking available there, go to the big parking lot at the back of the church on the south side and come in the south door.

There will be two recitals again this year.  The first will be at 2PM and the second at 3:45PM.  Students from my studio will be in both of the recitals.

1.  Getting Ready: Dress appropriately

a.  wear appropriate shoes that are quiet

b.  wear your dressy clothes.  students may choose to dress according to the title of their piece.  this choice should be discussed with the teacher.

c.  plan a dress reheasal before the performance.  practice stage procedure with your ensemble.


2.  At the Recital

a.  arrive approximately 10 minutes early.  get rid of gum at this time.

b.  no warm-ups in the performance room due to time constraints.

c.  students should remain in their seats until the previous ensemble performers have completed their bow and are walking back to their seats.


3.  Performance Procedures

a.  walk to the stage, pause to collect your thoughts and perform.

b.  after the performance face the audience and bow with your partner to acknowledge the applause.  practice bowing together.


4.  Audience

a.  turn off cell phones, beepers, pagers, and programmed watches before the recital begins. 

b.  performers derserve an attentive audience. enter only during applause.

c.  do not talk or whisper during a performance.

d.  the audience is expected to remain for the entire program.  the last performers deserve an appreciative audience.

e.  no flash photos during the recital.

The MMTA State Piano Contest Finals will be held onSaturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Ferguson Hall at theUniversity of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota. 

Reminders...

Please wear dress clothes.  (No jeans or t-shirts or shirts with writing on them)  Make sure shoes are appropriate for playing the pedals if they need to play the pedals for their pieces.  It is helpful for students to practice leading up to performance with the shoes on that they will be using for the festival.    This is a special event.  ·        Students must have the proper registration slip(MMTA State Piano Contest Registration Form) to present at the registrationdesk on contest day.  Those who show upwith no registration slip will be charged $5.00 for a new one, as this takesextra time on the part of the registration desk workers. 

·        Students must bring their music, with measuresnumbered.  All participants in contestare expected to abide by copyright laws. If a student forgets their music they should check in the hallways forsomeone with the same book and ask to borrow it.  If no music can be found in time for thestudent's performance, a critique will be written for the performance but noscore will be given. 

·        Only the student and the judge are allowed inthe performance room.

·        Students must use the bench in the room.

Students are allowed to warm up with scales, chords, a short exercise, or a portion of a piece OTHER than the contest piece.  If the contest piece contains a glissando, the student is allowed to include a glissando in their warm up.  Students are asked to greet the judge with a Good Morning/Good Afternoon/Good Evening as appropriate for the time of the day.  Students will do a short warm-up.  The warm-up allows the student to check the action of the piano keys and the pedal.  After the warm-up the student should put his/her hands in their lap until the judge gives instructions that they are ready to listen.  After playing, the student should thank the judge with the simple words “Thank you”.·        No practice rooms are available forstudents. 

 

·        Critiques and blank "Finalist"certificates will be mailed to me on Tuesday, March 19th. Piano critiques willbe graded with numbers ranging from 94 to 98. Winners will have scores of 96-98. Alternates will have a grade of 95. All other students will receive a grade of 94.  All winning critiques will be clearly markedwith a red "WINNER" stamp and will have an ensemble assignmentstapled to it. 

·        Students will be allowed to enter theregistration area 15 minutes before their performing time.

·        MMTA Contest T-shirts, sweatshirts, and musicbags will be sold in the registration area as long as the supplies last.
