Please wear dress clothes. (No jeans or t-shirts or shirts with writing on them) Make sure shoes are appropriate for playing the pedals if you need to play the pedals for your pieces. Students will do a short warm-up. This warm-up is not allowed to contain any part of the two pieces that they will be playing. The warm-up allows the student to check the action of the piano keys and the pedal. After the warm-up the student should put his/her hands in their lap until the judge gives instructions that they are ready to hear the festival pieces. After playing the student should thank the judge with the simple words “Thank you”.

The student performs only for the judge. Parents/Guardians need to wait for their student outside the room. A comment sheet will be available after the date and will be discussed with the student to see what they did well and how they can improve. This will be sent home for you to see. You need to save these as they may be needed to certify what scores the student has had in the past if you change teachers.

NFMC Festival Piece-Caitlin's Smile

Posted by Megan Gilles on January 19, 2014 at 9:50 AM Comments comments (0)

Fellow teacher Judy Zylstra shared this note that her student received from composer W.T. Skye Garcia.  Her student had emailed the composer to see why he had named his composition "Caitlin's Smile" since it was dedicated to Donna and Amanda.  His answer is quite moving and one of the exciting things about participating in festival.  Each of the required pieces on the list up until the last couple of levels is composed by an American composer, many, many of them still living.  Thus it gives students and teachers alike the opportunity to contact, communicate with, and sometimes even meet these composers!  None of my students are currently playing this piece, but they possibly could.  The required list for festival is in use for three years.

This is the note that was received:

Thanks so much for writing and for your inquiry about a composition that is very near and dear to me.  I have been asked about this piece before—perhaps because of the title, perhaps because of the dedication; or maybe just because of the music.  I offer you two replies, a short one and a more in depth and personal one, as follows:

(I am playing “Caitlin’s Smile”, and I notice it is dedicated to Donna and Amanda.  So, I am wondering, who is Caitlin?)

Short answer:  Caitlin was my neighbor.  She, her mother (Donna), and sister (Amanda) moved next door to us when she was 8 years old.

Long (and painful) answer:  Caitlin and Amanda became like family to us, watching movies, playing basketball, eating over, celebrating birthdays and holidays together.  My son, who was about 5 years younger than Caitlin, called her his cousin.  It still is very painful to me when I think of how Caitlin, who was only 16 at the time, was kidnapped and murdered by her mother’s ex-boyfriend back in 2005.  That happened on Friday, September 23; I wrote the song over the next few days, and it was played at her funeral.  No one, not even her family, new I had just written it. To me, it expressed all of the beautiful things I had come to love about Caitlin.  My wife suggested the title, and I love the thought of Caitlin’s smile—literally.

After, the funeral, I put the song away for a while; I knew it was a special song, but it was just too difficult emotionally for me to play it.  A few years ago I sent it to the publisher and gave them permission to publish it.  Caitlin’s family loves the song and has played the CD I made at many different meetings and events.  I have chosen to donate royalties from this song to scholarships in Caitlin’s name.

A website was established in memory of Caitlin, which you may wish to visit.  I hope you enjoy playing this special piece and can share in the joy and beauty of her special life.

Sincerely,

W. T. Skye Garcia
